Saptya? Have you eaten?
Ne saptya? Have you eaten?
How many of us know the weightage of this phrase?
Many of us take it for granted, but few of us long for it. Today, I was watching a Neeya Naana episode, and the topic of discussion was “individuals who share the happy side of marriage vs individuals who fear marriage.”
In that, a female individual said she lost her parents when she was young. Since then,
she has been navigating life on her own. Though she has siblings, she fears she can't always seek help from them if her married life faces some issues.
When the host, Mr. Gobinath, asked, “Don't you ever dream of having a new life filled with happiness?” she said, “Yes, I have. But still, I haven't overcome the trauma, haven't coped with the loss of my parents.”
That's when she said this:
“No one asked me whether I have eaten or not. When I go shopping, no one is there to choose a dress. I cook when I'm hungry. No one is there to offer something when you want it, or even before you ask for it.”
When she said this, I was quite taken aback by the reality many others are facing, and also by how easily we take very valuable things for granted.
This phrase is mostly said by our mothers. When we are busy with our friends or any work, the first call that most of us take for granted is our family's call, especially our mother's. But most often, all she is going to ask is, “Have you eaten?”
I'm not generalising or glorifying their selfless love, but pointing out their innocent soul filled with love. But when that voice is not heard anymore, we realise the weight of someone asking about your well-being.
Other than her, our friends do too. It's usually used in our common usage. But at times, we would feel how much that care is needed.
I remember one of my friends — whenever she calls or we meet in person, the first thing she asks is, “Have you eaten?”
No matter how happy or sad I am, that question always warms my heart.
Because hidden inside those simple words is love, care, comfort… and the feeling that someone thought of you.
