The Light That Guided Me

One of the people I deeply admire and respect, who feels like home to me, is our professor, Dr. Rufus sir.

When I joined my master’s in this college, although I had already spent three years here, this time it felt different due to the stream, timing, people, and the overall atmosphere. The first few days were difficult. I even had thoughts of quitting—not because I disliked the environment, but because I didn’t feel a sense of belonging. Somewhere, my heart felt distant.

Until I met Rufus sir.

He was like a light in our difficult phase of life. He often says that at the end of the academic year, he would gift a few students a lamp and a few other things. What I especially loved was how he explained the purpose of gifting a lamp, to remind students that they are the light of their own lives, if they believe they can change it. He also said that knowledge (light) serves you and brings you out of ignorance.

To us, he himself is a lamp.

Every time we are unaware of important things, even basic knowledge, he is the one who enlightens us. Because of him, we are no longer ignorant. Before he gifts anything, he himself is already a gift to us.

When we were in a dark phase, he shed more light than we needed, and now we have adapted to the atmosphere and are happily growing.

His classes are not just about textbook content, but about everything a student and a human being needs to know in daily life.

What I love most about him is his encouraging nature. No matter what level you are at, he never fails to appreciate you, and at the same time, he gently points out mistakes and limitations.

A one-to-one conversation with him is pure bliss. I’m sure everyone who has spoken to him would agree. After talking to him, we begin to reflect on our lives, academically and personally. We start asking ourselves whether we are growing, and we begin to appreciate ourselves, others, and the world around us.

There is a saying:

“Most people can make you laugh, but very few can make you think.”

And it is important to have such people in our lives.

He is one such person. I am glad that after a long gap, we got to have such a meaningful conversation with him, ranging from academics, birds, concepts like interconnected consciousness, biorhythm to skills, and much more.

Thank you for being a great mentor and a kind friend, sir. We sincerely hope to stay under your mentorship always.
